The Top 10 Sports Movies of All Time - Gen Z Edition

In our first installment of power rankings, we've got our own Gerard D'Ambrosio III giving his list of best sports movies. Let us know if you agree with his rankings in the comments below!

1. Remember the Titans

This movie is untouchable, in my opinion. It’s a prime example of why sports are much bigger than a game and the everlasting impact they can have. Denzel Washington is (obviously) a champ and the dynamic between Gerry and Julius relationship is undeniably captivating.

Remember the Titans tackles racism in the midst of desegregation in schools--which was definitely not a clean switch--and the challenges of building a winning team, a difficult task in and of itself. I also appreciated how the ending wasn’t necessarily a happy one. The world isn’t perfect and this ending reflected that in a heart-wrenching way.

2. The Sandlot

I’m prefacing this by letting you know I’m wearing P.F. Flyers right now. And, as a matter of fact, yes, I can run faster and jump higher. “Benny the Jet” Rodriguez is still my hero and I wish I was clever enough to have some of the comebacks that these kids had. An absolute classic and must-watch for all baseball fans.

3. Space Jam

Unsurprisingly, they’re running it back on this one because it was so damn good the first time. Having MJ dunk on some cartoon monsters is the type of content I will always appreciate. Also easy to get on-board with a good Bugs Bunny love story and looney antics from the rest of the crew. Hard to not put it higher. Going to be even harder to follow it up. Ball is in your court, LeBron.

4. A League of Their Own

THIS MOVIE IS SLEPT ON. It definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves. The film really takes you on a journey. You learn what it was like to be a woman who happens to be a professional athlete at a time when that combination inspired more chortles than cheers.

Seeing our protagonists overcome prejudice time and time again and achieve success despite the odds makes for an all-time movie that introduces what it’s like to be a STRONG, independent woman who can also hit dingers. Basically, a team of Beyonces way before Beyonce. Go watch this gem if you haven’t yet, then agree with me, because I’m right.

5. Rocky

Can’t mess with the Italian Stallion. This whole series is fantastic and the fact that the franchise is still alive with the Creed movies is extremely impressive, but I especially appreciate the grind from the absolute bottom. I love Mickey, I love Adrian, and you gotta love Paulie. Not many movies can get a person into the Boxing Hall of Fame so it’s safe to say it’s pretty legit.

6. Happy Gilmore

Adam Sandler has some history in sports movies (The Waterboy and The Longest Yard) but this was the best of the bunch in my book. Sandler always does a great job of portraying the unlikely hero but he’s rarely had a foil on the level of Christopher McDonald’s Shooter McGavin. Truly an absurd character in the greatest way possible. It would be criminal to leave this off the list and here is my way of abiding by the law.

7. Miracle

My red, white and blue heart swells with pride just thinking about this movie. It encompasses the fight that these young men and the United States were facing when all of the pros started making their way into the Olympic Games. I’d run through a wall for Herb Brooks. Great way to honor the Miracle on Ice.

8. Moneyball

One of the newer successes, the story of Billy Beane challenges traditional baseball methods and uses data and less glamorous stats to outplay richer teams. This was based on a true story and his methodology went on to win a championship in Boston, even if he hasn’t been able to finally secure a ring in Oakland just yet. Regardless, this film was a great way to honor Beane and his literally game-changing approach to baseball.

9. The Mighty Ducks

Gordon Bombay? More like Robert Downey Jr. with the way he turned his life around. Forced into coaching pee wee hockey, Coach Bombay inspires kids and finds his purpose through the sport he loved so much until his career was derailed by a knee injury. I love how the movie also sets up the rest of the trilogy and how Bombay’s relationship with his team and hockey grows alongside them. Great original story.

10. The Blind Side

It’s always tough to round out a Top 10 list but it ultimately came down to another inspiring true story for me. Following Michael Oher’s life as a young athlete with a rough upbringing, you can appreciate how he learns critical life lessons through sports and how the charity of others can have ripple effects that alter lives for the better. An all-around easy movie to root for.

  • Cool Runnings
  • Air Bud (the OG from ‘97)
